This well-filled disc combines the first three symphonies by Dmitri Shostakovich, all written before the composer had reached his twenty-third birthday. The First Symphony was in fact the graduation piece that completed his studies at the Leningrad Conservatory, but to quote Mark Wigglesworth’s own liner notes to this disc, ‘Shostakovich’s trade-mark musical gestures are all immediately obvious. Nervous tension and sarcastic wit, passion and intelligence, contemplation and action, nobility and banality – all expressed with an economy of means that is simultaneously subtle and direct.’ The work was an immediate success, and soon gained worldwide recognition through performances by Walter, Toscanini, and Klemperer. ‘The Soviet Union had discovered its first international star, and the authorities proclaimed him as an exaltation of the new at the expense of the old.’ The two symphonies that followed fared much less well, however, and are still rarely performed in concert. At least nominally, there is a political theme to both works - the Second Symphony was a commission from the State Publishing House to honour the tenth anniversary of the October Revolution, and the Third, with its subtitle ‘The First of May’, was a celebration of the international Worker’s Day. Both works end with choral finales, to texts which proclaim mottos such as ‘Labour, joy and song’ and ‘Revolution, march with a million feet!’, but the scores themselves proved too experimental for the taste of the Soviet authorities, and did little to enhance the standing of their composer. This disc is the penultimate in what ‘could be the most important Shostakovich cycle of recent times’ according to the reviewer on MusicWeb-International. Wigglesworth and his players in the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra have received great acclaim for their performances of the mature symphonies such as the Eighth or Thirteenth, ‘Babi Yar’, and here offer us the beginnings, works which in Mark Wigglesworth’s words ‘encapsulate all the musical ideas that were to remain present throughout the composer’s life.

Najnowsza płyta grupy Gossip (wcześniej: The Gossip) zatytułowana ‘Music For Men’ ukaże się 22 czerwca tego roku. Krążek wyprodukowany został przez słynnego producenta Ricka Rubina. Muzyka Gossip określana jest jako mieszanka soul, gospel, rocka, funk, disco, punk, pasji i rebelii. Po raz pierwszy świat usłyszał o nich w 2006 roku za sprawą świetnego albumu ‘Standing in the Way of Control’ - wtedy też uwagę mediów skupiła na sobie Beth. Oprócz charakterystycznego, wyzwolonego wizerunku zakochano się także w jej wokalu - porównywanym do Janis Joplin, Arety Franklin czy Tiny Turner a także muzyce, jaką wykonuje ze swoim zespołem. Album promuje singiel 'Heavy Cross'. Ostatnie lata zespół spędził w trasie, koncertując w Ameryce Północnej, Europie, Australii i Japonii. Ich występy na żywo wszędzie wzbudzają ogromne zainteresowanie, dzięki nim Gossip zyskali opinię jednej z najlepszych grup koncertowych świata. Brytyjski magazyn NME określił ich jako ‘Najlepszy punk-rockowo-dyskotekowo-soulowy zespół na tej planecie. Przy nich można bawić się przy nich tak, jakby nie było jutra.’ Tym bardziej cieszy fakt, ze w już w lipcu Gossip wystąpią jako jedna z gwiazd głównych Opener Festival w Gdyni. Nawet jeśli trochę już nam się ckni za nowym albumem The National, to opublikowany właśnie "The Virginia" - EP w randze albumu - a uzupełniona filmem DVD "A Skin, A Night" powinno ugasić pragnienie nawet najbardziej spragnionych fanów zespołu.The National z Cincinnati, w stanie Ohio, kwintet rezydujący obecnie na nowojorskim Brooklynie, zajmuje wyjątkowe miejsce w hierarchii amerykańskich wykonawców indie-rockowych. W ciągu zaledwie dwóch lat, od czasu ukazania się albumu "Alligator" stał się on jedną z najważniejszych amerykańskich rockowych formacji XXI wieku. Łącząc znakomicie ponadczasową tradycję Joy Division, Tindersticks i Scotta Walkera, a może i Leonarda Cohena, grupa kierowana przez braci Scotta i Bryana Devendorfów awansowała na sam szczyt. Bo rzeczywiście, jeśli już ograniczyć się do dwóch wspomnianych albumów, trudno by znaleźć we współczesnym rocku muzykę tak wielkiej urody, a jednocześnie siły, prowokującej do refleksji i wzruszeń. "The Virginia EP" ze swoimi kilkoma nowymi, jak zawsze sugestywnymi utworami, intrygującymi wersjami piosenek niby dobrze znanych, ale - jak się okazuje po wysłuchaniu ich wersji demo - nie do końca oraz nagraniami koncertowym staje się kolejną cegiełką w budowie imperium The National. Dodatkowo, włączony do pakietu film Vincenta Moona pozwala nam zajrzeć za kulisy działalności The National - koncertowej, studyjnej i prywatnej.
