Solowe sukcesy Morrisseya przewyższają to, co osiągnął ze swym byłym zespołem The Smiths, który rozpadł się w 1987 roku. W ciągu dziesięciu lat wokalista wydał 6 studyjnych albumów i serię singli, nim na pewien czas zniknął ze sceny. W listopadzie 2001 roku ukazała się kompilacja "The Best of Morrissey" zawierająca najważniejsze nagrania z dotychczasowego, solowego dorobku Moza. Materiał ukazał się wówczas na CD i wyłącznie w Ameryce Północnej. Teraz, po raz pierwszy składanka dostępna będzie na winylu, a dokładnie na dwóch winylach. Niedługo po rozpadzie The Smiths, Morrissey powrócił z solowym debiutem "Viva Hate" (1988). Longplay pokrył się złotem zarówno w Wielkiej Brytanii jak i Stanach Zjednoczonych, a także dotarł na szczyt listy sprzedaży w Anglii. Na "The Best of Morrissey" trafiły dwa kluczowe utwory z "Viva Hate" - "Everyday Is Like Sunday" i "Suedehead". Po pierwszym albumie Morrissey wydał kilka pojedynczych singli, które zostały zebrane na wydawnictwie "Bona Drag" (1990) i uzupełnione o piosenki ze stron B. Krążek osiągnął w USA złoty status i znalazł się w top 10 brytyjskiego notowania. Na "The Best of Morrissey" zamieszczono kilka numerów z tej płyty, mianowicie "Interesting Drug", "The Last Of The International Playboys", "Hairdresser On Fire" i "Suedehead". Na kompilację trafiły również piosenki z dwóch kluczowych albumów Morrisseya - "Your Arsenal" (1992) i "Vauxhall And I" (1994). Są to m.in. "We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful", "Glamorous Glue" i "The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get" oraz "Hold On To Your Friends". Pozostałe longplaye, które Morrissey wydał w latach 1988-1997 również są reprezentowane na "The Best of Morrissey". John Murry został adoptowany od urodzenia do rodziny Williama Faulknera. Niezdiagnozowany autyzm doprowadził do poważnych kłopotów zdrowotnych i aplikowania silnych leków, które doprowadziły go do uzależnień i problemów psychicznych w bardzo młodym wieku.
