E: Joseph Haydn wrote this Passion music as a commission from the bishops of Cadiz, Spain. To be heard after each reading of the individual bible passages is a piece of music that helps internalize “The Seven Last Words of Our Redeemer on the Cross.” Because of the meditative nature, it was a challenge for Haydn to compose varied and characteristic movements. However, he succeeded in a subtle manner. Haydn himself considered the work to be one of his most successful, and even during the last stages of composing it, he made an arrangement of the original orchestral work for string quartet. The latter version is to be heard on this new TALANTON release by Leipzig’s Laetitia Quartet, which is made up of musicians from the Gewandhaus Orchestra and the MDR Symphony Orchestra. The biblical texts are read by Johannes Jenichen. A welcome change from the numerous Baroque Passion settings, yet, at the same time, a Haydn rediscovery for the whole year!
