Long recognized as an outstanding chamber musician, Anthony Marwood has more recently been making waves as a concerto soloist, with two contributions to the Romantic Violin Concerto series and now a disc of Britten with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and Ilan Volkov. The youthful Violin Concerto, with its mix of anguished lyricism and changeability of mood nods to both Berg (whose own Violin Concerto had made a profound impression on Britten) and Prokofiev but the result is entirely personal. The still earlier Double Concerto, for violin and viola, is impressive above all for its precocious confidence; written when Britten was just eighteen and still a student at the Royal College of Music, it had to wait sixty-five years before receiving its belated premiere in 1997 at the 50th Aldeburgh Festival. Anthony Marwood is joined by star violist Lawrence Power (who makes two appearances in Hyperion’s new releases this month). The viola was Britten’s own instrument and his Lachrymae, inspired by a Dowland song, brings us to the other end of his career, for though it was composed in 1950, it wasn’t orchestrated until 1976, the year of his death.

Described in International Record Review as 'an absolutely instinctive Mozartian, with fleet fingerwork to match any, and with melodic playing of consummate beauty', Ronald Brautigam returns with the third instalment in his series of Mozart’s piano concertos. As on the two previous discs, he is joined by the period band Die Kölner Akademie conducted by Michael Alexander Willens, forming a partnership described on website klassik-heute.de as ‘Mozart interpreters of the first order’. The present disc includes Piano Concerto No.26 in D major, K 537, nicknamed the ‘Coronation Concerto’ on the basis of the slightly misleading information given on the title page of the first edition of the work, stating that the work was ‘performed by the composer at Frankfurt-am-Main on the occasion of the Coronation of Emperor Leopold II’, in October 1790. Mozart did in fact perform the work in Frankfurt, but the concert took place a week after the actual coronation, and was not part of the official festivities. Nor was it written for the occasion – Mozart had in fact premièred it the previous year, in Vienna. Popular for its beauty and rococo style, it is here preceded by Piano Concerto No.17 in G major, K 453, one of the rare concertos that Mozart composed with another soloist than himself in mind. Written for and premièred by his student Barbara Ployer, it is also unusual in that Mozart cast its last movement as a set of variations, with a bourrée-like theme developed at a helter-skelter pace, similar to an operatic scene unfolding on stage.

Polska Orkiestra Sinfonia Iuventus to istny gejzer energii – soczyste brzmienie, z którego bije młodość, zarazem intensywne emocje, jak i lekkość frazy. Tym razem do nagrania albumu zostali zaproszeni wybitny brytyjski pianista – Jonathan Plowright oraz Maestro Łukasz Borowicz, wspólnie wykonując słynny Koncert fortepianowy a-moll op. 17 (1888) Ignacego Jana Paderewskiego oraz dokonując światowej premiery fonograficznej Rapsodii symfonicznej na fortepian i orkiestrę op. 23 (1900) Zygmunta Stojowskiego. „Prezentowana na płycie Rapsodia symfoniczna na fortepian i orkiestrę powstawała w latach 1898-1900. Opublikowano ją z dedykacją dla brytyjsko-amerykańskiego pianisty Harolda Bauera, także ucznia Paderewskiego. Prawykonana z sukcesem w Berlinie w 1900 r. (Filharmonicy Berlińscy, dyr. Josef Řebíček) weszła na wiele lat do koncertowego repertuaru samego Stojowskiego, a także innych pianistów, należąc do jego szczególnie popularnych dzieł.” (Piotr Maculewicz) „Koncert miał premierę w Wiedniu w styczniu 1889 r., a wykonawczynią partii solowej była Anette Jesipowa (także adeptka Leszetyckiego prywatnie zaś druga z jego czterech żon – nb. wszystkie były jego uczennicami...); dyrygował Hans Richter. Natomiast muzyka Stojowskiego, w dzisiejszych czasach niesłusznie zaniedbana, jest cudownie romantyczna, dzięki jego długoletniej przyjaźni z Paderewskim.
