Duke Ellington – genialny kompozytor, pianista, aranżer oraz jego słynna orkiestra to, na dobrą sprawę, także najkrótsza historia muzyki jazzowej. Style i techniki interpretacyjne oraz brzmienia, jakie wprowadzał Duke Ellington, po dziś dzień stanowią wybitne osiągnięcia muzyki orkiestrowej. Zespoły Ellingtona wypracowały własny styl wykonawczy, stanowiący swoisty wzór wysublimowanej melodyki i perfekcyjnej aranżacji. Miało to wielki wpływ na twórczość innych, nie tylko jazzowych, muzyków. Bez innowacji Ellingtona rozwój jazzu byłby - w pewnym sensie – mniej kreatywny.   Muzyka Duke’a Ellingtona postrzegana była zawsze w kategoriach wielkiej sztuki. Innowacyjne pojmowanie kompozycji, aranżacji oraz całego zamysłu artystycznego, stało się – zwłaszcza dla jazzu – rodzajem drogowskazu, bez którego rozwój tej muzyki byłby prawie niemożliwy. Orkiestra i zespoły Duke'a Ellingtona stanowiły w historii jazzu określony standard brzmienia, wysublimowanej melodyki i perfekcyjnej aranżacji. To nie przypadek, że wraz z Ellingtonem w studio i na estradzie pojawiali się wybitni jazzmani, którzy wraz z genialnym kompozytorem, pianistą, aranżerem oraz leaderem tworzyli najpiękniejsze karty historii muzyki jazzowej: puzonista i kompozytor Juan Tizol, aranżer Billy Strayhorn oraz wybitni muzycy: Cootie Williams, Johnny Hodges, Barney Bigard, Ben Webster, Rex Stewart, Cat Anderson, Clark Terry, Gerry Mulligan, Dizzy Gillespie, John Coltrane, Charles Mingus, Mercer Ellington i Joe Pass. Wielkimi standardami ,,ery Ellingtona” były także jego kompozycje: ,,Sophisticated Lady”, ,,Do Nothing Till You Hear From Me”, ,,I Got It Bad”, ,,Satin Doll”, ,,Just Squeeze Me”, ,,Creole Call Love”, ,,Perdido”, ,,Caravan”( stworzony wspólnie z Juanem Tizolem ) , ,,Take The A Train”, ,,Chelsea Bridge” (z genialną aranżacją Billy’ego Strayhorna). Sukcesem o wielkiej artystycznej randze stały się ,,Concert Of Sacred Music”, ,,The Harlem Suite”, wspólne nagrania z Ellą Fitzgerald, Jimmy’m Rushingiem, Billie Holiday, Dizzy’m Gillespiem, inspirujące sesje z Maxem Roach’em, Charlesem Mingusem, Johnem Coltrane’m, czy Colemanem Hawkinsem.   Setki kompozycji, tysiące nagrań, a nade wszystko bezkres inspiracji czerpanych wprost „z Ellingtona” stały się swoistą muzyczną bazą dla wielu innych, nie zawsze jazzowych twórców. W istocie, jego wielkie standardy znaleźć można na prawie każdej jazzowej płycie.
