Beethoven again raised the expressive force of the symphony with the Fifth and introduced a theatrical element to it. Beginning with the most famous phrase in classical music and one of the most joyous, uplifting movements as a finale it is an exhilarating experience. Beethoven didn't complete his first symphony until he was almost 30 and it marks the beginning of his remoulding of the Symphony away from the Classical ideals of Haydn.

Oratorium na Boże Narodzenie, zawierające fragmenty wcześniejszych kompozycji Bacha, w tym świeckich kantat, i napisane na święta w 1734 roku, jest niezwykłe dlatego, że zostało stworzone z myślą o wykonywaniu w dwóch kościołach przez sześć dni świątecznych na przestrzeni dwóch tygodni. Zebranie odpowiednich kantat w celu stworzenia obszerniejszego dzieła nie było wtedy niczym niezwykłym, czego przykładem mogą być także Oratoria Bacha na Wielkanoc i na Wniebowstąpienie (BWV 249 and 11). Co więcej, możliwe jest, że od początku komponował kantaty z myślą o stworzeniu z nich większego dzieła. Oratorium na Boże Narodzenie powstało na rok kościelny 1734/35. Szczególny układ dat oznaczał, że Oratorium mogło być ponownie wykonane tylko w latach kościelnych o takiej samej sekwencji dni i dat. Do śmierci kompozytora dawało to jedynie 3 możliwe wykonania – w 1739/40, 1744/45 i 1745/46. Muzyka zawarta na tej płycie jest wspaniałym przykładem później twórczości Bacha. Jako że została skomponowana po Pasjach według św. Jana i według św. Mateusza i po słynnej Mszy, dojrzałość Bacha jako kompozytora widać zarówno w jej strukturze, jak i subtelnej orkiestracji i kontrapunktowym stylu chorałów.
