MEDICINE OF THE SOUL   Music and poetry have been used since the earliest known times as a therapeutic ritual to heal both the soul and the body. They have also been used for meditation, and in particular, as a means to mediate with the divine. There is no culture that does not consider music and musical instruments as essential for civilization to progress. Since Pythagoras and the Pre-Socratic philosophers, musical scales and their relationship to cosmic harmony have been thought to have an effect on the harmony of both the bodily humors and the human organs. Music’s mathematical base and its harmonic proportion re-establish the balance of whatever is distorted, or sick. In the past, music was considered to be the language of feelings. Love was a disease of the soul, a kind of insanity, and in the past doctors used music to treat it.   What role does music play in our lives? To what depths does it go to get so much sap from such mysterious roots? The oriental mystic brotherhoods, who have inherited classical wisdom, say: “Music filters into the body through the ears just as blood flows through our veins, it purifies the blood, excites the soul, calms the spirit, relaxes the limbs and facilitates their movement”.   The rhapsode-musician is the mender who stitches and repairs broken things, “he sews the remnants of the past” and threads them together with his melodies and songs. The performer is inseparable from music and his sensitivity is directly linked to the effect achieved. He is not a mere translator or physician giving medicine. Like a goldsmith, he shares in music's spirit and uses its power to recover the origins that inspired it. Music extracts the essence of emotion from one's being.   I have based this selection of music on the moving and balsamic effect I now experience when listening to it. They are all versions, or extracts, that share the Pneuma label’s musical values (word that means Spirit). This recording is dedicated to those for whom music is not only an art to enjoy, but also an “effusion of the soul”. Eduardo Paniagua.

This boxed set edition includes previously unreleased recordings and an ample booklet (88 pages) with full liner notes in English, French and German. Released on five separate discs, Noriko Ogawa’s traversal of the solo piano music of Claude Debussy has been receiving consistent praise in the international music press, with distinctions such as Gramophone Editor’s Choice (twice); a top recommendation (‘10/10/10’) on the German website Klassik Heute, ‘Recording of the Month’ on MusicWeb International.com and ‘CD of the Week’ on BBC Radio 3 CD Review. Along with general acclaim for Noriko Ogawa’s approach to the music (‘a Debussy interpreter of exceptional class’ – International Record Review; ‘a most elegant, scrupulously sensitive interpreter’ – Gramophone), performances of individual works and sets of works have been singled out. In BBC Music Magazine Ogawa’s Images and Children's Corner were named benchmark recordings, while Classica-Répertoire placed the second book of Préludes and the set of Études among the most important and convincing versions in the discography. Less well-known works have also been cited, such as the piano score of the children’s ballet Boîte à joujoux (‘A superlative performance… worth the price of the disc alone’ – Gramophone) and Debussy’s own transcription for solo piano of Six Èpigraphes antiques (‘the pianist creates a poetic atmosphere which leaves the listener breathless’ – Classica-Répertoire). The original five discs have now been brought together as a boxed set with the addition of a sixth CD, containing Noriko Ogawa’s previously unreleased recordings of Debussy’s only work for piano and orchestra, the Fantaisie pour piano et orchestre from 1890, and five school fugues, written as part of Debussy’s training at the Paris Conservatoire, and transcribed from the original manuscripts for this occasion.

On this recording we have a selection of works for solo harpsichord and for violin and continuo by Daniel Purcell, most of which are premiere recordings. Traditionally, Daniel Purcell has been known primarily as the younger brother of Henry Purcell (though a strong argument can be made that they were cousins), and it has been said that it was from this family connection only that he derived ‘what little reputation which as a musician he possessed’ (Sir John Hawkins). It is not true, however, that Daniel’s legacy was based entirely on the fame of Henry. Daniel lived for over twenty years after Henry’s death in 1695, adopting styles and forms that only became popular in England around 1700, including the da capo aria, the Italianate cantata and – most relevant to this recording – the solo sonata.    Nearly all of Daniel Purcell’s surviving solo harpsichord music consists of arrangements, the only clear exception being the short Toccata, a brief essay in the style of the preludes from Henry Purcell’s harpsichord suites. The Suite is a simple but effective arrangement of movements from the composer’s own suite, for four-part strings, for Farquhar’s play The Inconstant. The expressive Rondeau is also likely an arrangement of a piece for four-part strings. The other three harpsichord pieces are simple arrangements of Daniel’s songs, derived from Oxford manuscripts, and reflecting Daniel’s links with the city.    Daniel Purcell also wrote a great deal of music for violin (or recorder) and continuo. The Chaconne is a cut-down version of a four-part piece from his suite for Trotter’s play The Unhappy Penitent. Also on this disc are several Sonatas for violin and continuo, inspired by the works of the Moravian composer Gottfried Finger (c. 1655 – 1730), as evident in the cheerful tunefulness of these works, the avoidance of counterpoint, and a fondness for short movements connected in a ‘patchwork’ fashion.    The violinist Hazel Brooks and harpsichordist David Pollock – also known as Duo Dorado – have been charming audiences with their performances since 1999. Inspired by a shared commitment to present music of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in an accessible way, these two prize-winning musicians have performed together throughout the UK and beyond. Programmes by the duo have been praised for their varied and colourful textures; of one recording, Early Music Review wrote: ‘The performance from Hazel Brook is assured and stylish, complemented by some fine continuo accompanying as well as spirited solo playing from David Pollock.’
