Pierwszy koncertowy album w dyskografii Soundgarden. Reaktywacja zespołu w oryginalnym składzie (Chris Cornell, Kim Thayil, Ben Shepherd oraz Matt Cameron) wywołała wielkie poruszenie w całym muzycznym świecie, a grupa nie schodziła z okładek magazynów (m.in. SPIN oraz Guitar World). Soundgarden zagrali serię udanych koncertów, a niepublikowany wcześniej utwór „Black Rain”, który trafił na wydaną jesienią składankę ich największych hitów „Telephantsm”, został nominowany do nagrody Grammy w kategorii Najlepsze nagranie hardrockowe. Kolejnym krokiem w karierze formacji jest wydanie albumu koncertowego. Materiał na „Live On I-5” został zarejestrowany w 1996 roku podczas trasy koncertowej po Zachodnim Wybrzeżu Stanów Zjednoczonych promującej album „Down On The Upside”. Nagrań dokonał inżynier dźwięku Adam Kasper przy użyciu 24-śladowego przenośnego studio. Płyta z wyborem nagrań z trasy miała ukazać się zaraz po jej zakończeniu, ale po rozpadzie grupy, taśmy przeleżały w szafie w Studio X w Seattle (obecnie przemianowane na Bad Animals) pokrywając się grubą warstwą kurzu.Surowy, spontaniczny i pełen energii album jest znakomitą wizytówką grupy w jej najlepszym okresie. Znalazły się tu takie klasyki jak: “Spoonman”, “Rusty Cage”, “Burden In My Hand” i “Black Hole Sun” (zaśpiewany solo przez Chrisa Cornella) oraz “Jesus Christ Pose”, uznany za najlepsze wykonanie koncertowe tego utworu w historii grupy. Na płycie nie zabrakło intrygujących przeróbek. Na „Live On I-5” trafiły “Helter Skelter” zespołu The Beatles oraz „Search And Destroy” z repertuaru proto-punkowych klasyków The Stooges.„Live on I5” to Soundgarden u szczytu ich formy.
