Pochodził z regionu Nowa Anglia w stanie Connecticut, jego matka Anna Orlowski była Polką. Karierę muzyczną rozpoczął w połowie lat pięćdziesiątych jako nastolatek, lecz jej szczyt przypadł na lata sześćdziesiąte XX wieku, kiedy to zdobył olbrzymią popularność po obu stronach Atlantyku.
