„Street Fighting Years”, ósmy studyjny album Simple Minds, ukazał się w maju 1989. Za produkcję odpowiedzialni byli Trevor Horn oraz Stephen Lipson. Nagrania odbyły się w Szkocji pomiędzy 1988 a 1989, w trakcie zmian personalnych w zespole. Na krążku grupa odeszła od dotychczasowego brzmienia: pozostając przy stadionowym rozmachu, zrezygnowała z wpływów soulowych i zaadoptowała brzmienia folkowe oraz celtyckie. Również teksty na „Street Fighting Years” zyskały politycznego wymiaru, które zostały już zasygnalizowane w „Ghost Dancing”. Podatki, sytuacja w Irlandii czy losy aktywistów – Nelsona Mandeli czy Stevena Biko – posłużyły za inspirację. Album jako czwarte z rzędu wydawnictwo Simple Minds, wspiął się w UK na pierwsze miejsce listy przebojów. Wydawnictwo promował hitowy singiel „Belfast Child”, który ukazał się trzy miesiące przed premierą krążka. „Street Fighting Years” doczekało się zremasterowanej w Abbey Road Studios edycji – zajął się tym Andrew Walters. Na nowej wersji, poza podstawową tracklistą, znalazł się dodatkowy krążek z B-side’ami, alternatywnymi wersjami i 12 remiksami, jak również premierowym wydaniem koncertu z Werony (1989). Książeczka została zaprojektowana przez wieloletniego współpracownika zespołu, Stuarta Croucha, a w środku można przeczytać notkę od Daryla Easlea’i, który przeprowadził wywiad z Simple Minds oraz producentem Trevorem Hornem specjalnie na potrzeby reedycji.
