Niemal dokładnie rok po płycie "II" Van Halen zaprezentował światu swoje kolejne arcydzieło. Płyta "Women And Children First" ukazała się w marcu 1980 roku, a zespół ponownie powierzył brzmienie piosenek Tedowi Templemanowi.Recenzenci piali z zachwytu, a jednym z powodów było to, że Eddie Van Halen, jego brat Alex, Michael Anthony i David Lee Roth zawarli na albumie wyłącznie autorskie piosenki, do tego były one cięższe, bardziej drapieżne niż na wcześniejszych płytach. Aczkolwiek nie zabrakło tego luzackiego, imprezowego sznytu. Z "Women And Children First" pochodzi kilka genialnych kompozycji Van Halen, choćby "And The Cradle Will Rock...", "Everybody Wants Some!!" czy "Romeo Delight" (lata później świetnie przerobiona przez thrashowy Annihilator). W kabaretowej/musicalowej niemalże "Could This Be Magic?" gościnnie śpiewa nieżyjąca już niestety Nicolette Larson, współpracowniczka Neila Younga.
