Jako student Royal College of Music grał na perkusji w „Hugh the Drover”. Po trasie koncertowej BBC Symphonic Orchestra w 1975 r., którą dzielił z Pierrem Boulezem (i w którą włączył dzieła Waltona, Deliusa, Tippetta i Brittena), poproszono go, aby dokonał japońskiego prawykonania „Mass of Life” Deliusa. Natomiast podczas wykonania A Child of Our Time w Houston, zaprezentował się w koszulce „Turn on to Tippett” – nieco przekornie, biorąc pod uwagę fakt, że znał kompozytora od lat 50.
