Longplay "Wintersong" wypełni 12 kompozycji. Materiał został zarejestrowany w studiu w Vancouver. Na płycie Sarah McLachlan przedstawi własne, nietuzinkowe interpretacje klasycznych świątecznych numerów. Album tworzy idealny soundtrack to mroźnego zimowego wieczoru, gdy za oknem szaleją zamiecie i zawieje. Longplay otwiera klasyk z repertuaru Johna Lennona "Happy Xmas (War is Over)". Kawałek oryginalnie został nagrany przez Johna, Yoko i Plastic Ono Band z udziałem chóru z Harlemu. Sarah do studia również zaprosiła chórzystów, jej wybór padł jednak na zespół dziecięcy ze szkoły w Vancouver, nad którą objęła kuratelę. Kolejną perełką na krążku jest utwór "River", w oryginalnej wersji znajdujący się na wydanej w 1971 roku płycie "Blue" Joni Mitchell. Tytułowy numer "Wintersong" artystka skomponowała specjalnie z myślą o albumie. Ponadto, McLachlan oddała hołd Gordonowi Lightfootowi przygotowując nową wersję "Song For A Winter’s Night". Dodatkowo sięga po amerykańskie standardy, biorąc na warsztat kompozycje "I’ll Be Home For Christmas" i "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas". Do zestawu dołączone zostały również takie tradycyjne pieśni, jak ”Child Is This (Greensleeves)”, “O Little Town of Bethlehem” czy “Silent Night” a także klasycznie brzmiące “In A Bleak Mid Winter" oraz połączone “The First Noel/ Mary Mary.” Na płycie wśród gości pojawi się Diana Krall, która zagra na fortepianie w utworze “Christmas Time Is Here” pochodzącym z kreskówki "Charlie Brown Christmas" z 1965 roku, a także Kanadyjczyk Jim Creegan z formacji Barenaked Ladies na basie.
