LSO Live is delighted to renew its relationship with the magnificent Tenebrae choir, whose previous recordings on the label have included Berlioz’s L’enfance du Christ and Handel’s Messiah. As part of the 2011 City of London Festival, Tenebrae joined an ensemble from the LSO at St Paul’s Cathedral for a performance of Fauré’s Requiem, preceded by a selection of Bach’s Chorales interspersed with his Partita’s performed by Gordan Nikolitch, leader of the LSO.The centrepiece of the programme was Helga Thoene’s remarkable superposition of Bach’s choral themes with solo violin. The performance was restaged in May 2012 in the sublime acoustic of the Church of St Giles Cripplegate and recorded by LSO Live.Fauré’s requiem in D minor is a setting of the Roman Catholic Mass for the Dead in seven movements. Most famous is the soprano aria Pie Jesu, but the final movement In Paradisum has featured on many film soundtracks, such as The Thin Red Line, American Beauty and 28 Days Later. The Requiem exists in three different versions, with John Rutter’s edition being performed here.In December, the LSO and principal conductor Valery Gergiev present a major touring programme of the complete Brahms and Szymanowski cycles in Europe with residencies in London, Paris and Luxemburg. Following an Autumn tour of the USA, Tenebrae will perform selection of Christmas concerts in December, followed by another a tour of the USA in Spring 2013. A selection of Tenebrae Sopranos will also feature in the performances of Alice in Wonderland at the Royal Opera House.

Acclaimed conductor Thomas Zehetmair presents the world premiere recording of Hans Gál’s Second Symphony alongside an electrifying live recording of Schubert’s Ninth Symphony, the "Great". Hard on the heels of the world premiere recording of Hans Gál’s First Symphony (AV2224), internationally celebrated conductor Thomas Zehetmair follows with a superb value 2-CD set including the first ever recording of Gál’s Second Symphony, alongside Schubert’s "Great" Ninth. The release showcases two ends of a great melodic tradition, presenting Gál’s music alongside 19th-century symphonic repertoire that represents its roots and core values. Gál’s Second Symphony is perhaps the most personal of his four, with an emotional depth and haunting beauty that inspired Gál’s biographer, Wilhelm Waldstein, to write of the slow movement: “it is, I dare to assert, the most important Adagio since Bruckner.” Written in 1942-43, during the darkest war years, this symphony distils the process of overcoming pain and loss into the language of pure music.  Featuring Northern Sinfonia in their spectacular venue Hall One of The Sage Gateshead, these recordings underscore Zehetmair’s hallmark electrifying intensity, precision and vision. This release continues Avie’s ongoing celebration of the music of Hans Gál, following highly acclaimed releases of the complete works for solo piano by Leon McCawley (AV2064), chamber works for Violin and Piano featuring Annette-Barbara Vogel (AV2182), and concertante works for violin and orchestra, also with Vogel, and Kenneth Woods conducting Northern Sinfonia (AV2146).

Described as ‘a potent antidote to the stuffiness that still passes for seriousness at many a concert’, Christian Lindberg, whose most recent appearances on disc has been as a conductor, has again brought his trombone to a recording session, with the usual, ear-opening results. One of the great musical communicators of our time, Lindberg performs virtuoso concertos dedicated by him by composers such as Berio and Xenakis, but is equally at home in light music genres. Here he pays his respects to the great trombonists of swing and jazz, revelling in Glenn Miller's Moonlight Serenade and Fats Waller's Keepin’ Out Of Mischief Now. The 2011 centenary of Lindberg's fellow Swede, the great tenor Jussi Björling, has also occasioned a tribute, and the glamour, fun and high drama of opera is further explored in A Night at the Opera, a medley of favourite arias. Lindberg's great friend Jan Sandström – the composer of the Motorbike Concerto which has taken Lindberg and his trombone around the world countless times – has contributed two pieces: Song to Lotta and A Christian Song, and in a nod to one of his first discs, Lindberg returns to Vivaldi's Four Seasons, giving a dare-devil performance of Spring on his alto trombone. The swinging, glittering and lush accompaniments are provided by Lindberg's 'own' band – the Swedish Wind Ensemble whose chief conductor he is – and add greatly to this Lindbergian extravaganza.
