Carmina Burana is renowned for the thrilling opening chorus, continuing on a wild journey through a barbaric world of changing fortunes and fate, love and lust, death, temptation and submission.This is a hugely engaging recording. This version conducted by Antony Walker(Music Director of the Pittsburgh Opera and the Washington Concert Opera), uses the pared-back forces of voices, two pianos and percussion (as prepared by Orff) to effective and stimulating effect. The oft heard dirge of heavy orchestration is banished, leaving a strong, cleanly articulated, vigorously sprung performance with some notable performances from Australian soloists Jonathon Summers, Sara Macliver and Paul McMahon and percussion group Synergy. Antony Walker shines with his command of working with such forces.
