Miejsce Green River w historii amerykańskiej muzyki jest bezsprzeczne. Zespół uważa się za prekursorów muzyki grunge, legendarna dziś scena „Seattle” zaczęła się właśnie od Green River. Jeff Ament (bas), Mark Arm (gitara/wokal), Bruce Fairweather (gitara), Stone Gossard (gitara) i Alex Shumway (perkusja) połączyli siły w 1984 roku, by w 1987 i 1988 roku wydać odpowiednio EP-kę „Dry As Bone” oraz jedyny jak dotąd studyjny album „Rehab Doll”.
