Wydawało się, że forma Van Halen będzie sukcesywnie spadać, po ogromnych sukcesach (i następujących po nich ekscesach) pierwszych czterech albumów, ale kwartet udowodnił w 1982 roku płytą "Diver Down", że stać go jeszcze na wiele.Piosenki Eddie i Alex Van Halenowie, Michael Anthony i David Lee Roth nagrywali ponownie w Kalifornii, ponownie z Tedem Templemanem. Wśród nich było aż pięć coverów. Najsłynniejszym z nich była oczywiście genialna przeróbka "(Oh) Pretty Wonam" Roya Orbisona, która stała się kolejnym wielkim hitem Van Halen. Zespół zmierzył się też z "Dancing In The Street" Marvina Gaye'a, którą parę lat później wspaniale przerobili David Bowie i Mick Jagger. "Diver Down" dotarła do trzeciego miejsca na "Billboardzie", spędziła na liście 65 tygodni, a w USA album cztery razy pokrył się platyną.
