The greatest of all musical myths tells how the Thracian singer Orpheus looses his beloved Eurydice to death, saved her from the underground world but again looses her. This highly dramatic and tragic story was extremely popular with composers of the early seventeenth century who express Orpheus’ sentiments, joys and laments in virtuoso, moving airs. After graduating at the Conservatory of Caen, Claire Lefilliâtre continued her singing studies with Alain Buet at the Conservatory of Alençon, where she graduated with distinction. This encounter determined her further career and was the start of her foray into in early music. She obtained a passion for Baroque expression, specialising in declamation with Eugène Green and in Baroque gesticulation with Benjamin Lazar. This and her thorough knowledge of the Baroque repertory make Claire Lefilliâtre one of the most individual and prominent soprano soloist of 17th-century French and Italian music. Since 1999 she sings with Le Poème Harmonique, conducted by Vincent Dumestre. The concerts and recordings of this ensemble, featuring music by Etienne Moulinié, Pierre Guédron, Antoine Boesset, Emilio de Cavalieri and Il Fàsolo, have received unanimous praise from the international press and are applauded for their innovative approach. On stage Claire Lefilliâtre sang the leading female role in Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme by Molière (Avignon, Versailles, Rouen, Caen), the main character in the opera Vita Humana by Marazzoli (Utrecht, Ambronay, Antwerp) and in 2008 she sang Hermione in Cadmus et Hermione by Lully (Paris, Rouen, Caen, Aix-en-Provence, Luxembourg). Already Jan Van Elsacker’s record of achievements is impressive, the result of a long and fine singing career which he started as a young talent with the Antwerp Cathedral Choir. After studying piano and singing at the Conservatory of Antwerp, he began his career by working with La Petite Bande, Collegium Vocale and Currende. In 1996 Jan Van Elsacker was winner of the International Soloist Competition ‘Musica Antiqua Bruges’ and he was finalist at the Erna Spoorenberg Vocalists Presentation. His great passion is Italian Early Baroque, repertory with which he has gained great international recognition. Jan Van Elsacker regularly works with renowned ensembles such as Akâdemia, Le Poème Harmonique, l’Arpeggiata, Weser Renaissance, la Fenice and the Ricercar Consort. He has given a number of song recitals with Jos van Immerseel, Claire Chevallier, Katia Schoemaker and Tom Beghin. In 2003 he was Klara’s ‘festival star’ during the Festival Musica Antiqua in Bruges. Il Trionfo del Tempo was created at the request of Mr. Stefan Dewitte, former Director of the Festival “Musica Antiqua Bruges” who asked Jan Van Elsacker a concert program around the theme “Orfeus”. This was an excellent opportunity for Jan to start an intense cooperation with Bart Rodyns, a good friend of him with whom he has done many great projects. The very first performance of Il Trionfo del Tempo, entitled “Il Canto d'Orfeo”, was an immediate succes. Since then, the ensemble is programmed in festivals in Belgium and abroad. Il Trionfo del Tempo wants to profile itself as an ensemble that deals with music in which the text is very important and focuses on the early Italian Baroque.

This 58th volume of the Romantic Piano Concerto series presents two composer-pianists who contributed to Liszt’s piano extravaganza Hexaméron (1837).Thalberg (who would be celebrating his 200th birthday in 2012) famously took part in a pianistic ‘duel’ with Liszt, and was popularly acclaimed as the greatest pianist in the world during his lifetime. He only wrote one piano concerto, and that in his teens, but it is a brilliantly effective showpiece for virtuosity and stamina, the pianist’s hands barely leaving the piano. Johann Peter Pixis has now been consigned—perhaps unfairly—to the oblivion where so many early 19thcentury composers dwell. These are world premiere recordings of his charming Piano Concerto and Piano Concertino.Howard Shelley, undisputed master of the music of the early Romantic period, directs the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra from the keyboard with his usual insouciance and poise.

Marguerite of Austria (1480-1530) lived a sad life, by the time she was thirty she was berieved of her child, family and a future on the French throne. Nevertheless, Marguerite was artistically gifted and enjoyed the comforting company of writers, musicians and composers at her court in Mechelen. Her library is a "mer à boire" of exceptional musical manuscripts. Musical works reflecting the grief and unhappiness of the narrator fill the greater part of a splendid manuscript housed nowadays in the Bibliothèque Royale in Brussels; it was undoubtedly prepared for Marguerite between 1508 and 1516 in full awareness of her musical tastes and her predilection for mournful subjects. The program on this cd by La Morra is largely based on music preserved in this manuscript.La Morra (2000) has performed in many renowned Early Music events across Europe, including Belgian Festival van Vlaanderen, Dutch Network Oude Muziek, etc. The ensemble (4-7 musicians) is usually heard in various vocal and instrumental constellations which vary according to the requirements of performed repertoire. La Morra 's first CD recording Le Jardin de Plaisance was enthousiastically received: "…skillful and involving is Le Jardin de plaisance…. To hear these pieces performed so elegantly is to be reminded why one fell in love with this music; and there are times when such a reminder is timely". Early Music
