Eartha Kitt urodziła się jako Eartha Mae Keith 17 stycznia 1927, na plantacji bawełny w niewielkim mieście North w Karolinie Południowej. Jej matka, Annie Mae Keith, była pochodzenia afrykańskiego i czirokeskiego. Kitt rozpoczęła swoją karierę w 1943, w zespole Katherine Dunham Company, w którym występowała do 1948. Pierwszymi piosenkami w jej repertuarze były: "Let's Do It", "Champagne Taste", "C'est si bon", "Je cherche un homme", "Love for Sale". Stała się rozpoznawalna dzięki charakterystycznemu głosowi i stylowi, a ze względu na biegłą znajomość języka francuskiego i niemieckiego, zdobyła popularność również w Europie. W 1950, Orson Welles obsadził Kitt w roli Heleny trojańskiej w jego inscenizacji "Fausta". Dwa lata później wystąpiła w rewii "Nowe twarze 1952 roku", w której wykonała piosenki Monotonous i Bal, Petit Bal. Kinowe filmy z jej udziałem to m.in.: "The Mark of the Hawk" (1957), "St. Louis Blues" (1958) i "Anna Lucasta" (1958). W latach 60. zasłynęła rolą Kobiety-Kota w telewizyjnym serialu "Batman", w którym zastąpiła Julie Newmar. Kitt występowała również w rewiowych teatrach i kasynach w Las Vegas, gdzie poznała polską piosenkarkę Violettę Villas.
