Uznawany za jeden z najbardziej wpływowych albumów w historii rocka, kultowy "1999" Prince'a okazał się punktem zwrotnym w jego karierze. Po latach kiedy uważano go za artystę R&B, nagrał prawdziwie crossoverowy materiał, śmiało przekraczając granice gatunków i łącząc brzmienia rock, funk i R&B z nowofalowym popem. Na płycie znalazły się takie hity jak "Little Red Corvette", "1999" i "Delirious", dzięki którym Prince był jednym z pierwszych czarnoskórych artystów, którego klipy były na wysokiej rotacji w ramówce MTV. Utwory z "1999" okazały się zaledwie próbką intensywnego i bardzo płodnego okresu 1981 - 1982. Poza pracą nad własnym materiałem, Prince pomagał też swym protegowanym - Vanity 6 i The Time, nagrywając kilkanaście piosenek, które ostatecznie trafiły do archiwum niepublikowanych nagrań.
