Thomas Linley was born in Bath into a highly musical family. Had he not died tragically young in a boating accident it seems likely that he would have won for himself a far greater name. He travelled widely, was a friend of Mozart (who commented that 'had he lived, he would have been one of the greatest ornaments of the musical world'), and was widely mourned. The Song of Moses was one of his last works. A grand oratorio in Handelian style, it contains a varied range of arias alongside choruses which are at once expertly written and intensely dramatic (something here developed to the full by the Holst Singers). The story is taken from Exodus (Chapter 15) and concentrates on the Israelites' rejoicing after the Red Sea was closed over the pursuing Egyptian forces—much the same as Handel's Israel in Egypt. This recording is the work's first performance since 1778. Let God arise is an earlier work, one of his first surviving compositions of any size, and is a large-scale anthem after the style of Handel or Boyce. Again the choruses have real strength and contrapuntal power, and the arias show a skill rare in one so young. GRAMOPHONE CRITICS' CHOICE 'Another indispensable release in the English Orpheus series. In 2010 I was invited by the British singer David Clegg to work with the NFM Wrocław Philharmonic Choir, a young professional choir mentored by the British conductor Paul McCreesh and led by the charismatic conductor Agnieszka Franków- Zelazny. David had invited a number of British choral musicians, of which I was one, to work with the choir, and with them I gave a concert of English music that included a number of my own pieces. The choir brought a different colour to this music, one which was immediately warm and giving. They worked enthusiastically and willingly in the English language and this, coupled with their commitment and wonderful spirit, led to us making this recording together.

Recordings by Cardinall’s Musick of William Byrd’s work have been a landmark worthy of one of England’s greatest masters’ (The Guardian) The Cardinall’s Musick are acknowledged as the foremost performers of Byrd’s music. Under their director Andrew Carwood they have recorded the complete Latin church music, the final volume of which won the Gramophone Record of the Year. Now they turn to Byrd’s English church music, a genre which shows the composer treading a path between his own innate Catholicism and the requirements of the reformed Church of England. But far from sublimating Byrd’s genius this difficult situation gave rise to one of his most fertile periods. The Great Service was described as ‘the finest unaccompanied setting of the Service in the entire repertory of English church music’ upon its discovery in 1922. Written for ten voices, it is gorgeously lavish and grand—very different to the simple, unmelismatic style demanded by the Anglican clerics. Byrd did not publish it in his lifetime. Also recorded here are five beautiful English settings on sacred themes, but probably written for performance in the home. They are masterpieces in miniature: each work is so distinctive and demonstrates Byrd’s genius for word-painting, his typically Elizabethan wit and of course his imaginative handling of polyphony
