Zach Condon - twórca Beirut – zapowiedział swój piąty studyjny album – „Gallipoli”. Wraz z zapowiedzią wydania płyty, udostępnia tytułowy utwór. Pracę, nad przynoszącym dwanaście utworów albumem, rozpoczęły się zimą 2016 roku, gdy Condon wrócił do swoich starych organów Farfisa - tych samych, na których nagrywał dwa pierwsze albumy Beirut („Gulag Orkestar” z 2006 roku i rok młodszy „The Flying Club Cup”). Po nagraniach w Nowym Jorku i Berlinie (który teraz nazywa swoim domem), Condon wraz z zespołem i producentem Gabe Wax (Speedy Ortiz, Soccer Mommy, Adrianne Lenker / Big Thief) osiadł w Sudestudio - kompleksie studyjnym w miasteczku Puglia na południu Włoch. To tam odkrył na nowo radość tworzenia muzyki, która stała się podstawą „Gallipoli”.

Zach Condon, twórca zespołu Beirut, opowiedział o powstaniu albumu: "Pewnego wieczoru natknęliśmy się na wyspiarskie miasto Gallipoli będące średniowieczną fortecą i poszliśmy krętymi uliczkami za procesją instrumentów dętych, przed którą szli kapłani niosący posąg świętego miasta. Następnego dnia, za jednym podejściem, napisałem piosenkę "Gallipoli", robiąc sobie przerwy tylko na jedzenie.  W końcu, po dziesięciu godzinach pisania jak w transie, po północy wyciągnąłem Nicka i Paula, żeby dodali trochę perkusji i basu. Byłem bardzo zadowolony z wyniku. To było dla mnie jak oczyszczający miks wszystkich starych i nowych płyt i wydawało się, że wróciłem do dawnej radości z muzyki. Resztę miesiąca spędziliśmy w studiu we Włoszech, kończąc ostatecznie cały album do listopada.".
