Niewiele dokumentów dotyczących jego życia przetrwało, dlatego wiadomo że Robbie de Visée był francuskim gitarzystom, teoretykiem, lutnistą i kompozytorem. W 1680 roku został rzekomo powołany na dwór Ludwika XIV - tak zwany "Roi Soleil" - gdzie był podziwiany przez swoich dobroczyńców oraz wielkich muzyków wpływowych w Vairailles (wśród nich Lully i Couperin). Wydał trzy kompozycję na gitarę podczas tego okresu, a wiele współczesnych manuskryptów z jego muzyką napisaną przez amatorów, studentów i znanych muzyków jest pewnym świadectwem popularności jego dzieł.
