“To Notice Such Things”, the follow up album to Durham Concerto, is a collection of four newly-recorded orchestral works featuring Jon himself on piano. The title work is written as a six-movement suite for solo flute, piano and string orchestra. It is a poignant tribute to Jon’s long time friend, the late John Mortimer, QC. Literary references abound, appropriately for the creator of Rumpole of the Bailey. The music emanates from the stage show, Mortimer’s Miscellany, which Lord accompanied. To Notice Such Things is the last line of the Thomas Hardy poem “Afterwards”, which ended Mortimer’s show. The first movement, As I Walked Out One Evening, from the W H Auden poem of the same name, opened the revue. The second movement, At Court, captures the 60s and 70s heyday of the free-speaking barrister, whilst Turville Heath, evokes the raconteur reposing in his well-tended garden. The peculiarly named The Stick Dance refers to the days when Mortimer’s legs were failing him; he still loved a good jive but mainly observed the jiving of a female companion whilst supporting himself on his stick. The Winter of a Dormouse is a twist on Lord Byron’s Summer of a Dormouse, which describes the indignity of ageing. Mortimer had chosen the diminutive creature to appear on his coat of arms when appointed a Knight of the realm. The work ends with Afterwards, a fitting mirror image to Mortimer’s Miscellany. Jon Lord played To Notice Such Things at Mortimer’s memorial service in November 2009, in front of an illustrious audience that included the Duchess of Cornwall, members of the Mortimer family, Lord Mandelson, Neil Kinnock, Jeremy Paxman, Alan Rickman, Peter O’Toole, Sir Tom Stoppard and Jeremy Irons who closes the album with his reading of the poem “Afterwards. This recording will serve as the lasting memento of a great, beloved English eccentric. The album proceeds with a gorgeous instrumental arrangement of Jon’s Evening Song – the original version appears on his best-selling album Pictured Within – here substituting the vocal line with the mellow strains of alto flute and horn conjuring a gentle summer sunset. The next track, For Example, combines clever puns with heartfelt homage. Written for the Trondheim Soloists, it’s a nod towards one of Jon’s favourite composers, Edvard Grieg, whose initials provide the play on words of the title. An early piano teacher introduced Jon to the great Norwegian composer, whose charming and folksy Wedding Day at Troldhaugen is woven into the fabric of the work. Air on a Blue String follows, a blues-meets-Bach fusion delivered with heart and soul. The album ends with Jeremy Irons’ noble reading of the poem “Afterwards”.  Jon’s music easily joins a tradition of great English composition of the last century. It is visceral and direct, deeply touching to anyone who hears it. To Notice Such Things is a window into Jon’s humanity, his observance of life’s cycles, and his generous spirit which will spread far and wide through his compositions.

All four works on this disc rely on existing compositions, with titles that  more or less specifically refer to this fact. In the case of Rachmaninov’s Corelli Variations, it is the famous theme used by Corelli in his violin sonata La Follia which undergoes a radical pianistic treatment taking it through all the sonic and atmospheric possibilities offered by the instrument. With his celebrated transcription of Bach’s Chaconne, Ferruccio Busoni had a very different aim, wanting to shed new light on the work without actually changing it. As he himself wrote, Bach taught him ‘to recognize the truth that good, great and universal music remains the same, regardless of whatever means through which it resounds.’ A virtuoso pianist, Busoni nonetheless had recourse to great skills in writing idiomatically for the instrument, and turned his transcription into a truly pianistic work. Ravel’s collection of waltzes was composed as a nod to Schubert, who in 1823 had written two collections of waltzes, the Valses nobles and Valses sentimentales. In no way is it possible to call the work a pastiche, however – in it Ravel shows the range of his musical palette, in a manner that caused Debussy to call his ear ‘the most refined that has ever existed’. Finally, Stravinsky’s Three movements from Petrushka is the composer’s arrangement of music from his own ballet, commissioned by Arthur Rubinstein. The origin of the music to Petrushka was in fact a sketched work for piano and orchestra, and the later arrangement was therefore to an extent a return to the original concept. The result is a virtuoso piece, in which an almost percussive approach to the instrument is combined with lightning-quick changes in atmosphere and sound. Freddy Kempf has previously recorded no less than ten highly acclaimed solo discs for BIS, of which the latest also contained a series of legendary piano works, namely Mussorgsky’s Pictures, Ravel’s Gaspard de la Nuit and Balakirev’s Islamey – according to Gramophone’s reviewer ‘a formidable programme formidably played… This is “live” virtuosity with a vengeance, with absolutely no hint of a safety net.’

The association of Denis Gaultier with Apollo in a 17th c. lute manuscript is not as audacious as it might at first appear: the lutenist was held in great esteem by his contemporaries; indeed, for many he was the embodiment of genius on the lute, the “nonpareil”, and one of the very few capable of “speaking” to his listeners. At first glance, his compositions seem little different from those of his collegues, but further examination reveals a sophistication unparalleled in any other lute music of the period. One is immediately struck by the economy of the writing, in which no note is superfluous and the musical structure reduced to its essence. This minimalist approach is even more apparent in later, published versions which show subtle traces of revision. Denis Gaultier exploited the instrument to the full, and in doing so take the art of lute-playing to a realm undreamt of by elder colleagues. His music placed great demands on the lutenist, lute and listener alike for, knowing what could be achieved, Gaultier chose to push the instrument to its limits, and everyone else along with it.
