Billboard nazwał New Riders Of The Purple Sage kluczowymi przedstawicielami country-rocka. Rok 1972 był dla zespołu znaczący. Doszło do przetasowań personalnych, ich drugi album "Powerglide" miał znakomite recenzje, a grupa ruszyła w trasę po amerykańskich halach, konsekwentnie wyłaniając się z cienia Grateful Dead swą odurzającą mieszanką klasycznego amerykańskiego songwritingu, country, rocka, bluegrassu i soulu. 27 sierpnia 1972 roku New Riders ponownie dzielili scenę z Greatful Dead, stając się częścią - jak się miało okazać - jednego z najbardziej legendarnych wydarzeń w historii pop kultury. Na terenach dzisiejszego Oregon Country Faire, Chuck Kesey (brat pisarza Kena Keseya) zorganizował charytatywny koncert, który wkrótce ochrzczono Field Trip. W historycznym wydarzeniu w upalny dzień, podczas którego zabrakło wody, uczestniczyło 20 tysięcy osób. "Field Trip" to dokument tamtych wydarzeń i porażającego występu New Riders. Znajdziemy tu wczesne wersje utworów "Groupie", "Whiskey" i "Linda" razem z płomiennym wykonaniem "Whatcha Gonna Do".
