"Heartbeat City" ukazał się trzy lata po "Shake It Up" i okazał się jednym z największych sukcesów w historii The Cars. Wyprodukowana przez Roberta Johna "Mutta" Lange (m.in. AC/DC, Foreigner, Def Leppard) płyta dotarła do trzeciej pozycji na liście "Billboardu" i aż czterokrotnie pokryła się platyną w USA oraz złotem na Wyspach. Z tego wydawnictwa pochodzi niezapomniana ballada "Drive", a także przeboje "You Might Think", "Hello Again" (teledysk do tej kompozycji wyreżyserował Andy Warhol; klip wygrał pierwszą MTV Video Music Award w 1984 roku).
