Zasłużenie uważany jest za najwybitniejszego obok Anotino Carlosa Jobima twórcę bosa novy. Mendes urodził się 1941 roku w mieście Niterói, gdzie ukończył konserwatorium, z zamiarem zostania pianistą klasycznym. Zainteresowanie jazzem pokrzyżowało te plany. Już pod koniec lat 50-tych zaczął grywać, jako muzyk jazzowy w klubach, w których królowały bossa nova i samba. W 1961 roku zespołem Sexteto Bossa Rio wydał płytę „Dance Moderno”, koncertował w Europie i Stanach Zjednoczonych oraz nagrywał z Cannonballem Adderleyem i Herbie Mannem. W 1964 roku utworzył w USA własną grupę Brasil '65 (przemianowana potem na Brasil '66).
