Leopold Godowski, urodzony w 1870 r. w miejscowości Żośle koło Wilna, spędził większość życia w USA odbywając podróże koncertowe na wszystkich kontynentach świata. Co zaskakujące, ten znakomity wirtuoz fortepianu nigdy nie pobierał systematycznych lekcji gry i, wyjąwszy krótkie studia w Paryżu (pod kierunkiem Saint-Saëns’a) i Berlinie, był muzycznym samoukiem. Prezentowana na płycie twórczość Godowskiego w dużej mierze składa się z transkrypcji i bardzo wymagających studiów techniki fortepianowej biorących za punk wyjścia dzieła innych kompozytorów. Łukasz Kwiatkowski radzi sobie jednak znakomicie ze wszystkimi wykonawczymi trudnościami pozwalając słuchaczom cieszyć się twórczością mało znanego kompozytora.

 The sound of Köthen culminates in J.S. Bach: in his music and in the environment, which favoured its creation. The very young Leopold (1694-1728) began his reign with an edict for confessional tolerance and he paid tribute to the Muses. Prince Leopold of Anhalt-Köthen was a musically educated man who probably recognized the meaning of J.S. Bach immediately. In 1717 he appointed J.S. Bach, then 32 years old, to be the Anhalt-Köthen Prince's own musical director". Previously, he had raised the number of the court's orchestra to 17 among them excellent Cammer Musici of the same orchestra that he had admired as a student of the Knights' Academy in Berlin (and which the King of Prussia had thrown out without a word!).

Andrew Parrott is a master of musicological detective work known for his adventurous and uncompromising scholarship. He is also internationally known for his pioneering historically informed performances and recordings of pre-classical repertory. This new release combines the best of both, resulting in the first full reconstruction and recording of the funeral music for J. S. Bach’s patron, Prince Leopold of Cöthen. Bach’s years in Cöthen were musically fertile and Prince Leopold was a knowledgeable and committed supporter of music and the arts, so it’s ironic that much of Bach’s output during those years has been lost or even destroyed. The score for Trauer-Musik, written in 1728 on the occasion of the Prince’s sudden death at the age at the age of 34, has almost completely disappeared, yet through the discovery of numerous clues in other works and writings, Parrott has been able to recontruct what was clearly a heart-felt homage.
