Na początku lat 70. New Riders of The Purple Sage uważani byli za najlepszą psychodeliczno-kowbojską grupę. Coś, co zaczęło się od niepozornego przedsięwzięcia chcącego opanować grę na elektrycznej gitarze hawajskiej Jerry'ego Garcii z Greatful Dead i wokalisty Johna "Marmaduke'a" Dawsona, stało się niezależnym bytem. Z Buddym Cage'em, który zastąpił Garcię zespół w 1972 roku, New Riders of The Purple Sage wydał dwie płyty "Powerglide" i "Gypsy Cowboy". Choć znajdowali się w cieniu Greatful Dead, dla których otwierali koncerty, dzięki znakomitym występom zdobyli lojalną grupę fanów na Wschodnim Wybrzeżu. "Thanksgiving In New York City" zarejestrowano podczas koncertu, który odbył się 23 listopada 1972 roku w Academy of Music. Poza klasykami Dawsona jak "Henry", "Portland Woman" i "Last Lonely Eagle", zespół wykonał bluegrassowe numery ("She's No Angel") czy piosenki R&B ("I Don’t Need No Doctor", "Willie And The Hand Jive"), które zaproponował basista Dave Torbert. Występ z 1972 roku zapoczątkował serię dorocznych koncertów, które przez trzy kolejne lata odbywały się w Nowym Jorku z okazji Święta Dziękczynienia.
