This double CD centers around securely attributed music Josquin Desprez probably wrote in Rome, but contextualizes these pieces by presenting world-premiere recordings of nine works by his contemporaries: Gaspar van Weerbeke, Bertrandus Vaqueras, and above all Marbrianus de Orto, all singers in the choir of the Cappella Sistina at the end of the 15th century. Completed in 1482, the Sistine Chapel was the epicenter of papal ceremony and thus a powerhouse musical institution.
