Brucker’s Mass in F minor is his largest and greatest Mass, classical in form but injected with a new vitality. Inspired by the composer’s recent studies of Mozart and Haydn, the Mass is symphonically conceived and the orchestra is allotted a prominent role. His musical treatment of the familiar text illuminates Bruckner’s devout spirituality and exemplifies the profound religious mysticism that characterizes his music in general. The Corydon Singers and Matthew Best are superb, with a sense of ensemble that is second to none. Premiered in 1962, the War Requiem is one of the twentieth century's defining works. Britten was commissioned to write it for the re-dedication of Coventry Cathedral, which was destroyed during the Second World War. Interspersing the Latin mass of the dead with texts by war poet Wilfred Owen he created a work that both mourned the dead and pleaded the futility of war.
