ICP Orchestra jest jednym z najoryginalniejszych europejskich big bandów. Prowadzący ją Misha Mengelberg rozwinął zapoczątkowaną w 1958 roku przez Jima Hall'a i Jimmy'ego Giuffre metodę "instant composition", którą wykorzystywał Derek Bailey podczas swoich koncertów - kiedy to dwa, trzy słowa zapisane na kawałku papieru stawały się podstawą i inspiracją dla kilkudziesięciominutowych improwizacji. U Mengelberga z czasem przybrało to formę pisanych historyjek, nie będących formą muzycznej notacji, a jedynie punktem wyjścia do "improwizacji". Do realizacji swych pomysłów Mengelberg wybierał stałych współpracowników, muzyków, znających i rozumiejących estetykę oraz procesy, zachodzące w Instant Composers [multisaksofoniści i klarneciści Ab Baars, Tobias Delius i Michael Moore, puzonista Wolter Wierbos, trębacz Thomas Heberer, violonczeliści Tristan Honsinger i Ernst Reijseger, basista Ernest Glerum, skrzypaczka Mary Oliver oraz Han Bennink]. W założeniu formuła tego big bandu miała umożliwiać każdemu członkowi zespołu komponowanie ad hoc, bez burzenia subtelnej tkanki całej grupy. Umiejętności muzyków grających w orkiestrze zawsze są najwyższej próby. A swoboda wykonawcza złożonych improwizowanych partii pozostawia poczucie spełnienia i pewność, że to co zostało zagrane, pomimo programowej improwizacji, w każdej sekundzie wykonania pozostawało pod całkowitą kontrolą wykonawców. Album "Jubilee Varia" wydany teraz na płycie kompaktowej (dotąd wydany tylko na winylu) nagrany został na koncercie w Zurychu w Rote Fabrik w listopadzie 1997 roku. Składają się na niego dwie suity (Jubilee Varia i Jealousy suite) i kompozycja lidera "Rollo I". Nagranie, z pozoru pozbawione wulkanicznych wyskoków sekcji brassowej bądź smyczkowej krok po kroku odkrywa coraz to nowe nici łączące wyobraźnię członków zespołu a błyskotliwe frazy poszczególnych instrumentalistów nie dają wytchnienia. Wszystko to osadzone na zwariowanej, pełnej wigoru i szaleństwa, grze na perkusji Hana Benninka, długoletniego współpracownika Mengelberga i żywej legendy free jazzowej perkusji. Ta muzyka hipnotyzuje, zastanawia, przyciąga, pozostawiając w naszej pamięci twórcze i głębokie refleksje!
