The distinguished Soviet pianist Tatiana Nikolayeva is a name familiar to many as one of the greatest forces behind the wealth of piano talent to flood from the former Soviet Union during the twentieth century. She was born on 4 May 1924 and began playing the piano at the age of three, subsequently entering the Moscow Conservatoire to study with Alexander Goldenweiser and Yevgeny Golubev. She retained her close connection with the Moscow Conservatoire all her life. Indeed, her name was inscribed twice on the marble Roll of Honour there, first as a pianist, then as a composer. After winning the 1950 Bach Leipzig Piano Competition, Nikolayeva built up a phenomenal volume of repertoire, ranging from Bach to Bartók and beyond. Her interpretation of Bach on record won great critical acclaim. Whilst others used so-called 'original' instruments, Nikolayeva preferred to play Bach on a modern Steinway - always with great success. Her long working association with Shostakovich, and her great understanding of all aspects of his music, made her one of the leading sources of contemporary knowledge about that great composer. It was Nikolayeva for whom Shostakovich wrote his 24 Preludes and Fugues, inspired by hearing her Bach-playing at the 1950 Bach bicentenary Competition in Leipzig (he was on the jury), and it was she who premiered them in Leningrad in 1952.'The remarkable Tatiana Nikolayeva ... uncovers Bach's revelations as if they were her own' (The Independent)'Absolutely superb. Alexei Volodin is one of the most outstanding Russian pianists of the present day, a true masterpianist. This is his 3rd recording on Challenge Classics which is focussed on his beloved composer Sergei Rachmaninoff.Alexei Volodin was born in 1977 in St. Petersburg, and began taking piano lessons there at the age of nine. A year later he moved to Moscow, where he studied first with I. Chaklina and later with T. Zelikman at the Gnessin Music School. In 1994 he enrolled in the master class of Professor Elisso Virsaladze at the Moscow Conservatoire. 2001/02 he studied at the Theo Lieven International Piano Foundation in Como.He has won several prizes at different international competitions. In 2003 he won the First Prize at the ninth edition of the Concours Géza Anda in Zurich, award that launched his international career.Alexei Volodin has given recitals all over the world. He has also performed with prestigious orchestras, such as the London Symphony Orchestra, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Filarmonica alla Scala, the Gewandhaus Orchestra Leipzig, the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana, the Moscow Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra, the Mariinsky Theater Orchestra St. Petersburg , the Orchestre  National du Capitole de Toulouse, the NDR Radio Philharmonic Orchestra Hanovre, the Orchestra of the Opera Berlin, the Orchestre National de France, the Staatskapelle Weimar, the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra in Budapest, the Radio Symphony Orchestra Berlin, the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra and the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra. He has worked with conductors like Valery Gergiev, Riccardo Chailly, Lorin Maazel, Christopher Hogwood, Jean-Bernard Pommier, Gerd Albrecht, Carlo Rizzi, Vladimir Fedoseyev, David Zinman, Eiji Oué, Myung-Whun Chung, Leopold Hager, Lawrence Foster, Marek Janowski, Zoltán Kocsis, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos among others.In May 2005, Alexei Volodin gave his debut recital at the Champs-Elysées Theatre in Paris, where he achieved an extraordinary public and critics' success, being immediately re-invited. After his debut recital in Montpellier, he has been re-invited to be "Artist in residence" in the season 2006/07. Alexei Volodin has performed, with great success, in Barcelona, Madrid, Lyon, Rome, Heidelberg, Baden-Baden, Frankfurt, Zurich, Vienna, La Roque d'Anthéron, Amsterdam, Bruxelles, Luxembourg, New York, Tokyo and Toulouse. Among his future engagements are included recitals in the London Wigmore Hall, the Vienna Konzerthaus and the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris.Other important engagements in the future include several concerts with Valery Gergiev and the London Symphony Orchestra in Germany and Luxembourg as well as with the New York Philharmonic in New York, with Vladimir Fedoseyev and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra in the Vienna Konzerthaus, with S. Bychkov and the NHK Symphony Orchestra in Japan, with Edo de Waart and the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande in Switzerland, with Antoni Wit and the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra in Warsaw, with Mikhail Pletnev and the Russian National Orchestra in Cologne.  Alexei Volodin is a Steinway Artist.
