Album został nagrany 23 maja i 7 czerwca 1961 roku w składzie: John Coltrane - tenor saxophone, McCoy Tyner - piano, Elvin Jones - drums, Jimmy Garrison - bass. Płyta uzyskała pięć gwiazdek wg "All Music Guide". Album został nagrany w nowoczesnej technologii DMM (Direct Metal Mastering). Opis technologii DMM: Direct Metal Mastering dosłownie oznacza "bezpośrednie nacinanie wzorca (np. płyty gramofonowej) w stemplu tłoczącym. Direct Metal Mastering to technika opracowana wspólnie przez TelDec (Telefinken-Decca) i Neumanna pod koniec XX wieku, pod koniec lat 80., mająca poprawić jakość tłoczenia płyt winylowych. Inaczej niż przy konwencjonalnym nacinaniu, gdzie sygnał z taśmy-matki wytłaczany jest na pokrytym aluminium dysku, będącym elementem pośrednim w procesie tłoczenia, DMM pozwalala nacinać bezposrednio płytę z metalu (miedzi), eliminujac w ten sposób pośrednie stadia - zamiast „trzech kroków" („mother", „father" i „stamper") miedziany dysk DMM służy od razu jako „matka".
