Czwarty album grupy założonej przed 18. laty przez Kim Deal z Pixies i Tanyę Donnelly z Throwing Muses, którą wkrótce zastąpiła siostra-bliźniaczka Kim - Kelley. Zważywszy częstotliwość, z jaką ukazują się albumy The Breeders, to następnego krążka zespołu Kim i Kelley Deal należy się spodziewać jakoś tak około 2015 roku. Na usprawiedliwienie tego, że między poprzednią płytą, "Title TK", a tą minęło ponad sześć lat można zapisać fakt, iż dwa lata upłynęły Kim Deal na koncertowaniu z reaktywowanymi Pixies. Co tym razem stanie na przeszkodzie, zobaczymy. W każdym razie na pewno mamy trochę czasu, aby nacieszyć się do syta "Mountain Battles", a nacieszyć się doprawdy jest czym. Choć w składzie The Breeders od dawna nie ma już Donnelly i jeszcze jednej współzałożycielki zespołu - Josephine Wiggs (wtedy - z grupy Perfect Disaster), siostry-bliźniaczki wyśmienicie kontynuują oryginalną koncepcję punk-popu, tyle że w sposób już nie tak radykalnie eksperymentalny, jak za czasów "Last Splash" z 2003 roku. "Mountain Battles" to przede wszystkim bardzo różnorodny zbiór piosenek, z doskonałym wyczuciem - jak zawsze - zarejestrowanych przez legendarnego Steve'a Albiniego. Są tu i znakomicie zagrane i zaśpiewane utwory czysto rockowe ("Overglazed", "German Studies", "No Way"), jak i przesycone melancholią ballady, wśród których szczególnie wyróżnia się "Night Of Joy". Jest tu - jeśli chodzi o cudze utwory - i leniwie potraktowany kawałek taneczny "Regalame Esta Noche", balansujący na granicy dancingowego kiczu, i mocno zakręcona interpretacja utworu "It's The Love" zaprzyjaźnionego zespołu The Tasties z rodzinnego miasta pań Deal, czyli Dayton w stanie Ohio. Ci ze słuchaczy, którzy w pamięci zachowali najlepsze momenty ze starszych albumów "Pod" i "Last Splash" i wyśmienitej EP-ki "Safari" na pewno nie poczują się zawiedzeni. Na "Mountain Battles", mimo upływu lat, jest wciąż ta sama przewrotność, psotność i nieprzewidywalność, jak za dawnych lat. No i ta sama, natychmiast wyczuwalna spontaniczność i emanująca z nagrań radość grania rocka.
