Pierwszy solowy album wokalistki ze wschodniego Los Angeles to fascynująca podróż przez jej długie życie, a jednocześnie przez bogatą muzyczną kulturę latynoską na przestrzeni ostatnich 40 lat. A że "Friend For Life" firmuje sam wielki Ry Cooder, komentarze są zbyteczne.Cooder "odkrył" Ersi Arvizu przypadkiem, przekopując się przez rózne wydawane w USA stare płyty z latynoskim rockiem i popem, kiedy przygotowywał koncepcyjny album "Chavez Ravine". Wśród tych starych płyt znalazł się singel z utworem "Gee Baby Gee", który był wielkim przebojem w latach 60, a który podpisany był przez żeńską grupę wokalną The Sisters. Tytułowymi siostrami były trzy panny Arvizu, wśród których prym wiodła Ersi. Młoda wokalistka w latach 70. występowała z grupą El Chicano, która w Stanach cieszyła się nie mniejszą popularnością niż główny eksportowy przedstawiciel latynoskiego rocka - Santana. Później jednak Ersi poświęciła się swej rodzinnej niejako pasji - boksowi i z czasem przeniosła się do Arizony, gdzie pracowała jako instruktorka i trenerka. Cooder odszukał wokalistkę, kiedy akurat przygotowywała się do koncertu reaktywowanych El Chicano. Ta chętnie zgodziła się wziąć udział w nagraniu "Chavez Ravine", a Cooder odwdzięczył się jej nie tylko produkując jej pierwszy solowy album, ale także kompletując towarzyszący jej wyśmienity zespół, w którym obok niego samego znaleźli się m.in. renomowany perkusista Jim Keltner, gitarzysta El Chicano Mickey Lespron, basista Rene Camacho, grający na conga Johnny Sandoval, doskonała sekcja dęta oraz grupa wokalistów, wśród których nie zabrakło obu sióstr Ersi. Efektem jest niezwykły, ponadczasowy album, łączący różne latynoamerykańskie nurty i rytmy z jazzem, rockiem, soulem i funky.
