Although Franz Schubert’s Lieder, his symphonies and his chamber music are staples in concert halls and on disc, his music for the stage is much less well known. He began composing operas in 1811, at the tender age of 13, and it is probable that the tuition he received from Antonio Salieri around that time fuelled his interest for the stage even further. Although he had one of his first public successes with the Singspiel Die Zwillingsbrüder, Schubert later encountered difficulties in getting his operas staged: most of them would remain unperformed for a long time after his death in 1828, and are still rarities in the repertoire. With a few exceptions, the overtures to these works have suffered a similar neglect, even though they display an astonishing abundance of musical ideas, and possess a stirring dramatic character beyond anything found in for instance the symphonic works. The striking originality of the music becomes even more obvious when performed on period instruments, as on the present recording with Manfred Huss and the fifty musicians in the Haydn Sinfonietta Wien, whose previous discs on BIS of works by Haydn has been warmly received by critics worldwide. Their recordings of Schubert's overtures were made in 1997 for release on the Koch/Schwann label, a disc which after its deletion from the catalogue has become a collectors’ item, with rare new copies being offered for as much as USD 200. For the present re-release the original recording has been remastered by BIS Records

Nordic Voices is a six-voice a cappella group blending solo and ensemble qualities. They have received glowing praise for their concert performances, and their initial release on Chandos (CHSA 5050) received praise from around the world. Washington Post wrote, ‘Intonations? Impeccable. Ensemble? Unfailing precision in phrasing, dynamics, colour – everything finely tuned. A succession of works ever-changing and expressing in meaning.’ Gramophone noted ‘ringing, clear timbres and an impressive blend.’

Coinciding with her 80th birthday, this substantial addition to Sofia Gubaidulina’s discography on BIS presents two recent works by the grande dame of contemporary music. As always with this composer, the music is intimately connected to her religious and philosophical beliefs. In the violin concerto In tempus praesens the numbers 1 and 3 – derived from the Holy Trinity – play an important role, as well as the concept of ‘Sophia’, implying divine wisdom and the creative power of God. The work was premièred by Anne-Sophie Mutter at the 2007 Lucerne Festival, and belongs to the most frequently performed instrumental concertos by a living composer. The soloist here is Vadim Gluzman who has received wide acclaim for his previous discs on BIS (‘Gluzman brings a compelling intensity, the sound firm but unerringly beautiful.’ The Sunday Times). Another pillar of Gubaidulina’s musical thinking is rhythm, as she herself has emphasized: ‘When I considered which of the three fundamental aspects of the musical texture… might represent the “roots”, it became clear to me that it was rhythm.’ It is therefore not surprising that she has written numerous works featuring percussion, the most recent one being the concerto Glorious Percussion which received its first performance in 2008 by an international group of eminent percussionists adopting the work’s title as its name. In this world première recording of the work, the ensemble appears with the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra under the acclaimed conductor Jonathan Nott providing expert support here as well as in the opening work on the disc.

5 CDs for the price of 2 During the mid-19th century, the Danish composer Niels. W. Gade was one of Europe’s most well-known composers, conducting his own works all over the continent. Starting out as a protégé of Mendelssohn’s, he later became his successor as music director of the famous Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, and made the acquaintance of Robert and Clara Schumann, and of Liszt and Wagner. Initially known as a composer of symphonies, Gade mastered the German musical idiom to perfection, while adding a Nordic accent to it, particularly noticeable in his best works. His eight symphonies were composed between 1841 and 1871, and although Gade remained active as a composer until his death in 1890, he wrote no more symphonies. When questioned, he is said to have stated that ‘there is but one Ninth Symphony!’ Among Gade’s works in other genres is the violin concerto (also included here), composed for the famous virtuoso Joseph Joachim. But it was the choral cantata genre which became his specialty. Such works generally utilized Danish texts, but were in many cases published in German translations and received numerous performances abroad. Within a year of its première, The Crusaders, for instance, was performed in Braunschweig, Vienna, Königsberg, Elberfeld, Breslau, Leipzig and Aachen. It would later reach even further afield – including New York and Buenos Aires – and Gade himself conducted performances in Amsterdam, Cologne and Birmingham. The recordings included in this box set were warmly received upon their original releases between 1986 and 1994, the reviewer in American Record Guide calling Neeme Järvi’s symphony cycle ‘a set which is not likely to be surpassed in the foreseeable future’ and Neue Zeitschrift für Musik giving it ‘an unqualified recommendation’.
