In his sinfonias, Bach reveals himself as the representative of the Empfindsamer Still, a style which developed as a reaction to rationalism, and which is mainly characterized by its intimate, sensitive and subjective expression. The expression of emotions is made into an objective in itself. In his Versuch Bach himself stated that a musician can only evoke emotion if he is touched by the music himself. Bach’s Empfindsamkeit particularly shows itself in the sudden dramatic modulations, the unexpected rhythms and harmonic turns and the capricious musical periods. Nature and people are not portrayed in standard formulas, their moods are translated directly into sound. Individual inspiration and liberation of the rigid forms are considered of paramount importance.
