Ich koncerty w Polsce w latach 70. w znaczącym stopniu przyczyniły się do spopularyzowania bluesa w naszym kraju, ich ówczesna popularność w Polsce osiągnęła poziom tak wysoki, że w pewnym momencie ich polski fanklub liczył więcej członków niż holenderski, a w naszym kraju ukazały się ich dwie płyty analogowe. From the middle of the thirteenth century, the Meissen Margrave Heinrich the Illustrious ruled as the new Thuringian Landgrave. He became famous primarily as a result of his magnificent court establishment and his activities as patron of the arts, poet, and composer. Besides his legendary tournaments, six of his songs have come down to us in the Grosse Heidelberger Liederhandschrift (Codex Manesse). This new TALANTON-CD is dedicated to a selection of songs, dances, and poems around the illustrious prince, played masterly and vivaciously by the ensemble IOCULATORES, and declaimed in Middle High German by Jörg Peukert.

LSO Live is delighted to renew its relationship with the magnificent Tenebrae choir, whose previous recordings on the label have included Berlioz’s L’enfance du Christ and Handel’s Messiah. As part of the 2011 City of London Festival, Tenebrae joined an ensemble from the LSO at St Paul’s Cathedral for a performance of Fauré’s Requiem, preceded by a selection of Bach’s Chorales interspersed with his Partita’s performed by Gordan Nikolitch, leader of the LSO.The centrepiece of the programme was Helga Thoene’s remarkable superposition of Bach’s choral themes with solo violin. The performance was restaged in May 2012 in the sublime acoustic of the Church of St Giles Cripplegate and recorded by LSO Live.Fauré’s requiem in D minor is a setting of the Roman Catholic Mass for the Dead in seven movements. Most famous is the soprano aria Pie Jesu, but the final movement In Paradisum has featured on many film soundtracks, such as The Thin Red Line, American Beauty and 28 Days Later. The Requiem exists in three different versions, with John Rutter’s edition being performed here.In December, the LSO and principal conductor Valery Gergiev present a major touring programme of the complete Brahms and Szymanowski cycles in Europe with residencies in London, Paris and Luxemburg. Following an Autumn tour of the USA, Tenebrae will perform selection of Christmas concerts in December, followed by another a tour of the USA in Spring 2013. A selection of Tenebrae Sopranos will also feature in the performances of Alice in Wonderland at the Royal Opera House.

Stephen Hough joins the celebrations for Chopin’s 200th birthday with a disc containing much of the composer’s most extraordinary music, written in the last years of his life where the expressive possibilites of his art were constantly unfolding as he imbued his favoured forms with previously unknown levels of complexity and emotional depth. This disc includes the intoxicatingly ornamented Berceuse Op 57 and the sublime Barcarolle in F sharp major as well as the Polonaise-Fantasy in A flat major and the towering Piano Sonata No 3 in B minor. Also included are two late Nocturnes which demonstrate how Chopin’s art had evolved since he first composed in that genre in his youth. The programme is completed by a selection of Mazurkas, each a tiny jewel, containing no less mastery than their larger counterparts, and providing moving sonic evidence of the contemplative profundity of Chopin’s late style. Stephen Hough’s extraordinarily sensitive playing is informed by his limitless technique and engaging musical imagination. This is the Chopin of a true Romantic.

Michael Praetorius was a hugely versatile German composer. His 1603 post as Kapellmeister in Wolfenbüttel necessitated extensive travel throughout Germany, enabling him to establish widespread acclaim as a conductor and musical advisor. Praetorius’s church music is much less known today than it should be, partly because of the sheer volume that he composed. This beautiful selection of hymns, chorales and carols attempts to reproduce the effect of a performance under Praetorius’s direction; soloists are drawn from the choir and instruments of late sixteenth- or early seventeenth-century design are used.
