Zdjęcia do albumu wykonał Francis Wolff (1907–1971), jeden z najbardziej znanych fotografów jazzowych wszechczasów, który był także producentem wykonawczym a jego umiejętności były niezbędne do sukcesu wytwórni Blue Note. Urodzony w Newark organista Larry Young (7 października 1940 r. - 30 marca 1978 r.) był pionierem modalnego podejścia do Hammonda B-3 (w przeciwieństwie do jazzowego stylu soulowego Jimmy'ego Smitha). Young grał z różnymi zespołami R&B w latach 50., zanim zdobył doświadczenie jazzowe z Jimmy'm Forrestem, Lou Donaldsonem, Kennym Dorhamem, Hank Mobleyem i Tommy Turrentinem. Około 1964 roku, jego muzyka zaczęła wykazywać wyraźny wpływ Johna Coltrane'a. Young następnie stał się częścią jednych z pierwszych grup syntezy jądrowej: najpierw w nagłych wypadkach! z Tony Williams Lifetime (z Tony Williamsem i John McLaughlinem), a także w Bitches Brew Milesa Davisa. Young Blues był drugim albumem Younga jako lidera. Nagrano w Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, 30 września, 1960.
