The programme on this disc include Rachmaninov's last work, the Symphonic Dances (1941) as well as The Rock, his first published orchestral work, but opens with The Isle of the Dead from 1909. Inspired by the painting of the same name by Arnold Böcklin, Rachmaninov based almost the entire thematic material on the four-note figure which stalks through so much of his music: the first notes of the plainchant setting of the Dies iræ, describing the terrors of the Last Judgement. The motif was Rachmaninov’s musical symbol for death – an ever-present spectre, sometimes feared, sometimes welcomed – and it impregnates the whole fabric of The Isle of the Dead. If The Rock, inspired by an image from a short story by Chekhov, is a youthful work by a composer just turned twenty, the Symphonic Dances, written almost 50 years later, sum up a lifetime’s musical and emotional experience. The title of the work doesn't reveal a programme of any kind, but when Rachmaninov suggested it to the choreographer Mikhail Fokine as the score for a possible ballet, he explained that its three movements followed the sequence Midday – Twilight – Midnight, possibly a description of life's journey from youth through middle age to old age. Andrew Litton and his Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra have already proven their skills in the Russian repertoire, with recordings of music by Stravinsky (‘If you're looking for a freshly painted Petrushka or a Rite to shake you up a bit, this is shockingly good’, International Record Review) and Prokofiev (‘An exceptional Romeo and Juliet, to be placed right next to the great ones’, Crescendo)
Anakoluth, Mark Polscher couples the strangeness of the electronic world of sound with the familiarity of natural and human sounds, manufacturing and civilization noises, as well as the sounds of various materials, everyday objects, and traditional musical instruments. In that he processes recordings of concrete sounds, sometimes beyond all recognition, and creates pure electronic sounds out of them, he forms all possible transitions between extreme alienation and natural reproduction. In this field of tension of “concrete” sonorities and “abstract” everyday sounds, the electronic sounds neutralize the known context of the concrete events, and vice versa: the natural material sometimes auratically and associatively charges the electronic sounds to such an extent that they too begin to speak. The anacoluthic formal principle in Polscher’s sound and aural story is based on the fact that at different phases in his life every human being moves in changing social, cultural, and musical contexts. For this reason, Anakoluth becomes a mirror and barometer of public opinion of audible life at the beginning of the twenty-first century. With the present 105-minute work on two CDs, the composer and producer of electro-acoustic works with predominantly scenic performance practice and over seventy theater and film scores has published his hitherto most extensive electronic composition. Polscher’s “glorious efflorescence of sounds” (The Wire) experiences in Anakoluth a new high point in terms of tonal density and polyphony.

„Elastic Days” to tytuł solowego albumu J Mascisa znanego z zespołu Dinosaur Jr. Nowy materiał został zarejestrowany w prywatnym studiu J’a Bisquiteen. Wykonawcą zdecydowanej większości partii instrumentalnych jest sam Mascis. Na klawiszach zagrał Ken Miauri, a swoich wokali użyczyli między innymi: Pall Jenkins (Black Heart Procession), Mark Mulcahy (Miracle Legion) czy Zoë Randell (Luluc). „Pobierałem lekcje śpiewu, dlatego mój głos brzmi łagodniej na płycie. Niedawno zakupiłem nowy zestaw perkusyjny, w związku z czym ten instrument jest bardziej obecny w utworach niż planowałem” - mówi J. Na kilka lat przed zawieszeniem działalności Dinosaur Jr, J wydał solowy album „Martin + Me”. Ten akustyczny, nagrany na żywo krążek był dużym zaskoczeniem dla fanów artysty. Od tego czasu, poprzez zmianę oryginalnego składu Dinosaur Jr w 2005 r., J pracował nad solowymi projektami czego rezultatem są albumy: „Sing and Chant for AMMA” (2005 r.), „Several Shades of Why” (2011 r.) oraz „Tied to a Star” (2014 r.).
