Apollo’s Fire with founder/director Jeannette Sorrell has won widespread critical acclaim with their half-dozen releases on AVIE. Most recently they released two adventurous albums that explored the byways of historically informed performance practice: early Americana on Come to the River (AV 2205) and ancient Celtic Christmas music on Sacrum Mysterium (AV 2269). Returning to their baroque roots, they offer a selection of works by Handel that showcases the Apollo’s Fire Chorus. The centrepiece of the album is the grand Dixit Dominus written during the composer’s early days in Rome. In a gesture to Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee year, Sorrell has chosen two works written for the monarch’s forbearers – the Ode for the Birthday of Queen Anne which celebrated that sovereign’s birthday in 1713, and Zadok the Priest composed for the coronation of King George II in 1727. As a bonus, Sorrell includes "The Lord Shall Reign" from the epic Israel in Egypt.

The Cleveland-based baroque orchestra Apollo’s Fire, with their founder/ director Jeannette Sorrell, has made an indelible impression on the international music market since launching on Avie with recordings of Bach, Mozart and Monteverdi. Vivaldi and Friends is a presentation of concertos by the Red Priest with a twist: two authentic Vivaldi Concertos – one for four violins, the other for two cellos – are interspersed with J. S. Bach’s transcript- ion of Vivaldi’s A minor concerto for four harpsichords, and Jeannette Sorrell’s own transcription of ‘Summer’ from the ever-popular Four Seasons. Sorrell’s arrangement mirrors the widespread baroque practice of transcribing violin works for keyboard. In her unique version, she performs the original violin parts on the harpsichord. The album ends with an enigmatic Tango Concerto by contemporary composer René Duchiffre, written in the idiom of Bach and Vivaldi for the unusual combination of two violas da gamba, and instrument not typically given the spotlight in baroque concertos and to the composer’s mind was unjustly neglected. The use of the Tango, a 20th-century dance form, is a nod to the characteristic use of dance forms during the baroque era....René Duchiffre is the pseudonym of René Schiffer, a wonderful cellist, who here also plays one of the viola da gambas and is wonderfully partnered by Ann Marie Morgan on the other. He’s a talented composer as well. Schiffer, as mentioned in the booklet, uses the alias Duchiffre when composing in historic style, which is what he did when writing this concerto.
