Blood, Sweat & Tears powstał w 1968 roku dzięki doświadczonemu klawiszowcowi i producentowi Al Kooper'owi, który chciał połączyć jazz z rockiem za pomocą zespołu, który włączył pełną sekcję dętą. Po odejściu Koopera gitarzysta Steve Katz i perkusista Bobby Colomby przejęli kontrolę nad grupą i zatrudnili weterana kanadyjskiego bluesa i piosenkarza rockowego Davida Claytona-Thomasa jako wokalistę i skompletowali skład, aby nagrać drugi album.
