Im Februar 2010 ware Norbert Burgmuller 200 Jahre alt geworden. Zur Hinterlassenschaft des Dusseldorfer Komponisten gehoren neben den hier eingespielten zwei Sinfonien ein Klavierkonzert, vier Streichquartette, eine Klaviersonate, 22 Lieder und mehrere kleinere Werke. Robert Schumann bezeichnete Burgmullers 1. Sinfonie als „das bedeutendste, nobelste Werk, das die jungere Zeit hervorgebracht hat“. Wahrend in dieser Sinfonie die Vorbilder – Beethoven, Weber und Spohr – des Komponisten noch deutlich zu erkennen sind, ist seine 2., unvollendete (oder zumindest unvollständig überlieferte) Sinfonie dagegen ein sehr eigenständiges Werk. Die Einspielung der Hofkapelle Stuttgart unter Frieder Bernius ist eine eindrucksvolle Hommage zum 200. Geburtstag des Komponisten. In February 2010 Norbert Burgmuller would be 200 years old. The legacy of this composer from Düsseldorf includes, in addition to the two symphonies recorded on the present CD, a piano sonata, 22 Lieder, and several smaller works. Robert Schumann described Burgmüller’s first symphony as “the most significant, noble work written in recent times.” Whereas in this symphony the models of the composer – Beethoven, Weber and Spohr – are clearly recognizable, the second, unfinished symphony (or at least it has been handed down unfinished), on the other hand, is a very original work. Howard Shelley continues his appraisal of a composer who in his lifetime was classed with Mozart and Beethoven, and enjoyed international fame and admiration. Shelley is a master of the Classical–Romantic style and in his hands the music of Spohr, heard very little today, reveals a freshness and excitement which is utterly beguiling.  Spohr’s Piano Sonata and Rondoletto are paired with works by George Onslow, Spohr’s exact contemporary. Both composers wrote very little piano music and this release comprises all their major works for the instrument. Again, music to charm and delight is rediscovered through Shelley’s expert performances.

Artysta prócz komponowaniem grał również na skrzypcach i trudnił się dyrygenturą. W jego repertuarze możemy usłyszeć: symfonie, opery (pierwszą operę romantyczną „Faust”), koncerty na skrzypce.
