Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber (1644-1704) unquestionably ranks with the leading masters of the 17th century. His Rosary (or Mystery) Sonatas – fifteen sonatas for violin and continuo portraying the fifteen Mysteries of the Rosary, and a long passacaglia for solo violin – constitute one of the virtuoso high points of the Baroque violin literature, as in addition to the daring technical and contrapuntal demands of Biber’s writing, each sonata employs a different tuning of the violin’s strings, known as scordatura. The entire set has been recorded by numerous violinists such as John Holloway, Andrew Manze, and many others. On the present recording, Daniel Sepec, presents an authentic interpretation of Biber’s famed sonata cycle on original violins of Jakob Stainer (c1617-1683), the celebrated Tyrolean violin maker of the Baroque period. Sepec is accompanied by Hille Perl who is considered to be one of the world's finest viola da gamba players, Perl’s long-time partner Lee Santana who plays archlute and theorbo, and harpsichordist Michael Behringer.
