On 11th March 2011 the earthquake off the Pacific coast of Japan and ensuing tsunami devastated the Tohoku region, causing great suffering and changing the lives of people not only in the affected areas but throughout the nation. This compilation, Bach for Japan, has been produced at the initiative of the Bach Collegium Japan and Masaaki Suzuki as part of their ongoing activities to support the victims of the disaster. As Masaaki Suzuki writes in his own introduction to the disc, it has been compiled ‘in commemoration of the large number of people who lost their lives, and in the hope that the music will offer consolation to those who have suffered bereavement, help to heal their hurt, and give them the strength to rebuild the country for the next generation.’ The selection comprises arias from BCJ’s ongoing cycle of the complete church cantatas, as well as instrumental movements and the motet Komm, Jesu, komm. Also included are three organ chorales, recorded by Masaaki Suzuki especially for this release. The disc is being sold for the benefit of ‘TOHOKU HELP’, a local relief effort organized by the Sendai Christian Alliance, with the performers donating their royalties and BIS Records contributing the same amount.

Three cantatas from 1729 gathered on the 50th volume of Masaaki Suzuki’s traversal of J.S. Bach’s cantatas testifies to a huge loss to music – along with another six works, they are all that remain of what was probably an entire year’s worth of cantatas, composed by Bach in collaboration with the Leipzig poet Picander (Christian Friedrich Henrici). Some fifty cantatas from this year are unaccounted for, but on the evidence of those that are still extant, it is still possible to see the outlines of the lost cantata year. Fairly concise, the cantatas generally make sparing use of the choir. Instead they centre on two arias, linked by one or two recitatives, and a final chorale. In addition, the surviving works contain several examples of parody – movements in which Bach combined Picander’s words with an already existing composition – as well as the reuse of earlier instrumental movements as introductions. A striking example is the opening Sinfonia of BWV 174, where Bach used the first movement of his Third Brandenburg Concerto, adding new parts for three horns and for a tutti section consisting of two violins, viola and three oboes. Another highlight may also be the result of a borrowing – the soprano aria Gottes Engel… from BWV149 is a minuet, complete with the polonaise accents fashionable at the time, and could well have served a secular purpose at another occasion. It is here performed by Hana Blažíková, appearing on this disc alongside three other familiar soloists of the series: Robin Blaze (counter-tenor), Gerd Türk (tenor) and Peter Kooij (bass). With another five discs to go before completing their monumental task, Masaaki Suzuki and his Bach Collegium Japan are in no way flagging, as proven by this splendid instalment, and by recent releases which have received critical acclaim, for instance in International Record Review, where Volume 48 was described as demonstrating ‘the ever-rising standard, by now quite stratospheric, of Suzuki and his choir and orchestra in this massive recording project.’

Masaaki Suzuki and his Bach Collegium Japan have taken a short break from Bach’s cantatas in order to record the same composer’s Motets. Although few in number, these include such well-loved works as Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied and Jesu, meine Freude. Remarkable for their expressiveness and beauty as well as for Bach’s virtuoso choral writing, most of the motets leave it open to the interpreters to perform them either a cappella or with instruments doubling the vocal parts. Masaaki Suzuki has opted for the latter alternative, and accompaniments range from a single organ, to strings and different combinations of strings and wind instruments. But nevertheless it is the singers of the Bach Collegium Japan that stand in the limelight here – and as followers of the Cantata series will already know, it is a marvellous choir. With regard to their recording of Bach’s B minor Mass, the reviewer in Diapason called them ‘a choir to dream of’, while his colleague in Fono Forum, when writing about the Easter and Ascension Oratorios, described them as ‘16 singers, who sing with such clarity and flexibility that choral fullness of sound, soloistic virtuosity and transparency seem to merge, and this to a degree that one does not find in any European ensemble.’ In view of the fact that several of the works are composed for double choir, the usual 16-member choir from the cantata recordings have been slightly expanded and here numbers 18 singers, of which some also appears as soloists. Included on the disc are the six motets BWV 225-231, as well as BWV 118 O Jesu Christ, mein’s Lebens Licht and BWV Anh. 159 Ich lasse dich nicht. The recording of the motets took place in Bach Collegium Japan’s usual venue, the Kobe Shoin Chapel, and during it a short film was made. In this, Masaaki Suzuki talks about the special place the motets hold for him. Several of them were composed for funerals, and he finds in them music with a greater ability to console than human words, but also with ‘a creative power for us to survive in this world.’ There is not only grief in the motets – to Masaaki Suzuki’s mind there is also the sound of angelic hosts: ‘I think the angels’ choir [in the Gospel of St Luke] might have been a double choir – as in Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied!’
