Among requiems, the one composed by Johannes Brahms is unusual in more than one way. First of all, it was one of the first works with that title that didn’t employ the standard text, in Latin, of the Roman Catholic Mass for the dead. Brahms instead compiled his own text from the German Bible of Martin Luther, placing the focus on the living rather than on the dead, as demonstrated by the beginning of the work: ‘Blessed are those who bear pain: for they shall be comforted.’ The result is a work suffused with the glow of humanism, notably less concerned with sin and punishment than many other works in the same genre. Indeed, in connection with one of the first performances of the work, Brahms said regarding the title that he ‘would gladly give up the German and simply put human’. It is this work, then, that Valery Gergiev chose to perform at his final concerts as principal conductor of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. This memorable event – the finale of an era in the life of the conductor as well as in the history of the orchestra – was captured on film, and is now being released on DVD. For the performances, and recording, of this work, in which the choir plays a central role, the orchestra invited the renowned Swedish Radio Choir, as well as the soloists Solveig Kringelborn and Mariusz Kwiecień.

It is a familiar fact that Antonio Vivaldi was a prime mover in the creation of the solo concerto, but what is less well known is that he also was the leading exponent of the older concerto a quattro – music in four parts, with several players to a part, intended for what we nowadays would call a string orchestra with continuo. As Vivaldi expert Michael Talbot explains in his informative liner notes, these works are notable not only for their beauty, but also for their experimental character and for providing the most important examples of fugal writing in Vivaldi’s instrumental music. It is not known when Vivaldi started to write them, but most of the almost fifty concertos probably originate from the 1720s and 1730s. They are recreational music par excellence, well suited to outdoor performance in gardens, but some of them may also have been played in various churches and theatres of Venice. This recording includes eight of the concertos, as well as the Sinfonia from the serenata La Senna festeggiante (The Rejoicing Seine) composed in honour of the young French king Louis XV, and the Sonata a 4 in E flat major ‘Al Santo Sepolcro’. The acclaimed Polish period band Arte dei Suonatori have made a number of highly regarded recordings, including a version of Handel’s 12 Concerto grossi Op. 6 which the international music press greeted with enthusiasm upon its release in 2008. It was ‘Orchestral Choice of the Month’ in BBC Music Magazine, received top marks in Diapason, and was described as ‘quite simply flawless and must be considered as a model for Handel interpretations of our time’ by the reviewer in the German magazine Toccata – Alte Musik Aktuell.
Berenguer de Palol (o Palou o Palazol) was born in Catalonia, the land of the Count of Rossillon. We know very little about his life. The vida recites: “... he was a poor knight and teacher of arms. He composed beautiful songs which he sang for Ermessen, wife of Arnon d’Avinyo, son of Maria di Peizolada”. The only date regarding his life that can be established with certainty is 1164, the year in which his patron Jaufre’ III died. The artistic activity of Berenguer has reached us through a series of passionate compositions of a rare musical as well as poetic beauty. His songs point out the particular ‘topoi’ of the Occitan love poetry; besides the choice of the language of Oc, his songs expound the idea of love so dear to the courtly poetry enclosed in the concept of ‘fin’amor’. Berenguer’s poetry shows an evident reseach of the supreme love, or joy; a way paved with suffering for love joined to the cult of feminine beauty. Also in the songs of this troubadour the main suject is the domna (woman), seen partly as an abstract goal in the search of love, and partly real, as his vida narrates. In the opening verse of the song, Tant m’abelis joys et amor et chans, we find the representation of the artistic current to which Berenguer apparently fully adhered; it seems appropriate to refer the first strophe entirely: “So much does joy, love, song, happiness, fun and courtesy, please me that there is no wealth nor abundance in the world that could make me happier. So that is why I know that my lady keeps the keys of all the goods I hope in and wait for, and I can have none of it without Her”.
