Był jednym z muzycznych wzorców dla artystów takich jak Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Elvis Costello, The Rolling Stones czy Bob Dylan. Sam inspirował się dokonaniami takich muzyków jak Lonnie Johnson, Bo Diddley czy Elvis Presley. W nocy z 2 na 3 lutego 1959 zginął w wypadku lotniczym, w którym śmierć ponieśli także: 17-letni Ritchie Valens, 28-letni Jiles Perry Richardson i pilot, 21-letni Roger Peters.
