Piąty album w dorobku U2, wyprodukowany przez Daniela Lanoisa oraz Briana Eno, oryginalnie ukazał się 9 marca 1987. W kontraście do eksperymentów z „The Unforgettable Fire” (1984), Irlandczycy postanowili tym razem celować w mocniejsze uderzenie, a jednocześnie bardziej konwencjonalne utwory zainspirowane muzyką irlandzką i amerykańską. W społeczno-politycznych tekstach U2 podkreślali kontrasty pomiędzy „prawdziwą” a „mityczną” Ameryką.  Na „The Joshua Tree” znalazły się jedne z najbardziej kultowych utworów w dorobku grupy: „With or Without You”, „I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” czy „Where the Streets Have No Name”.
