Dziewiąty solowy album w dorobku Marka Knopflera. „Down The Road Wherever” zawiera 14 premierowych utworów. Artysta po raz kolejny udowodnił, że z talentem poety potrafi opowiadać nawet o najprostszych tematach. – „Down The Road Wherever” to fragment „One Song At A Time”. Mój dobry przyjaciel Chet Atkins powiedział kiedyś, że wydostał się z biedy piosenka po piosence. Bardzo utkwiło mi to w głowie – tak artysta wyjaśnia tytuł krążka. Knopfler zgromadził podczas sesji nagraniowych grupę najlepszych muzyków, z którymi miał okazję pracować w ubiegłych latach, a także kilka nowych twarzy. Artysta zachęcał każdego, by pozostawił swój ślad w kompozycji, jednak bez zaburzania esencji utworu. Jak przyznaje muzyk: – Tworzenie płyty to nie zawsze autostrada, czasami droga może być naprawdę kręta i wyboista. Jednak na tym polega cała radość z nagrywania. Za produkcję „Down The Road Wherever” odpowiadają Knopfler oraz Guy Fletcher. Nagrania odbyły się w British Grove Studios w Londynie. Autorem wszystkich kompozycji jest Mark Knopfler. W „Just A Boy Away From Home” słychać fragmenty słynnego „You’ll Never Walk Alone”.
